Manglik Dosha: Meaning, Effects, Cancellation and Remedies
Few words cause as much worry in Indian marriage talks as "Manglik". Many families check it before fixing a match, and many young people hear about it for the first time when a rishta is suddenly put on hold. In this guide we explain, in simple words, what Manglik Dosha really is, how it is checked, when it is cancelled, and what traditional remedies people follow – without fear and without myths.
What Is Manglik Dosha?
Manglik Dosha is also called Mangal Dosha, Kuja Dosha (in South India) or Bhauma Dosha. In Vedic astrology, Mars is the planet of energy, courage, anger and action. When Mars sits in certain houses of the birth chart that are linked with marriage, family and partnership, astrologers say its strong energy can bring arguments, delays or stress in married life. That is the traditional idea behind the dosha.
Which Houses Make a Person Manglik?
| House of Mars | Area of Life | Traditional Concern |
|---|---|---|
| 1st house | Self and temperament | Short temper, dominating nature |
| 2nd house | Family and speech | Harsh words, family tension |
| 4th house | Home and peace | Lack of peace at home |
| 7th house | Marriage and partner | Conflicts with spouse |
| 8th house | Longevity and in-laws | Sudden problems, health worries |
| 12th house | Expenses and bed comforts | Loss, distance between partners |
Note that North Indian astrologers often use only houses 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12, while South Indian astrologers also include the 2nd house. This is one reason why two astrologers may give different answers for the same person.
Lagna, Moon and Venus: Three Ways to Check
Houses are counted from a starting point. Most astrologers check Mars from:
- Lagna (Ascendant) – the sign rising in the east at birth. This is the most important check, and it needs the exact birth time and place.
- Moon (Chandra Lagna) – the sign where the Moon was at birth.
- Venus – some astrologers also check from Venus, the planet of marriage.
If Mars is in a Manglik house from both Lagna and Moon, the person is usually called Manglik. If it happens from only one of them, many call it Anshik (partial) Manglik, which is considered milder.
Enter your date, time and city of birth and check from both Lagna and Moon in seconds.

When Is Manglik Dosha Cancelled?
Classical texts and practising astrologers list many situations in which Manglik Dosha is considered cancelled (dosha bhang) or very weak. The most commonly accepted ones are:
- Mars in its own sign – Mesh (Aries) or Vrishchik (Scorpio).
- Mars exalted – in Makar (Capricorn).
- Both partners are Manglik. This is the most widely followed rule. The two doshas are believed to balance each other.
- Jupiter's influence – if Jupiter is placed with Mars or aspects it, many astrologers say the dosha is reduced.
- Age – a popular belief says the effect of Mars becomes weaker after the age of 28.
- Strong guna milan – when the Kundli Milan score is high and other factors are good, many families give less weight to a mild Manglik placement.
Because the rules differ between traditions, a "Manglik" label alone should never be the only reason to accept or reject a marriage.
Common Myths About Manglik Dosha
Myth 1: "A Manglik will always have a bad marriage."
There is no rule like this even in traditional astrology. Astrologers look at the full chart – the 7th house, Venus, Jupiter, dasha periods and guna milan – not one placement. Millions of Manglik people have happy marriages.
Myth 2: "Manglik Dosha is rare."
Mars can sit in 6 out of 12 houses that count as Manglik, and it is checked from more than one point. So a very large number of people turn out to be Manglik from at least one reference. It is common, not rare.
Myth 3: "Expensive pujas are compulsory."
No genuine astrologer can force you to spend money. Be careful of anyone who uses fear to sell costly rituals, gemstones or "guaranteed" solutions.
Traditional Remedies for Manglik Dosha
If your family wants to follow traditional remedies, these are the simple ones most commonly suggested. They are matters of faith and personal choice:
- Hanuman worship on Tuesdays – reading the Hanuman Chalisa and visiting a Hanuman temple.
- Mangal mantra – chanting "Om Angarakaya Namah" or "Om Kram Kreem Kroum Sah Bhaumaya Namah".
- Fasting on Tuesdays (Mangalvar vrat), if your health allows.
- Donation – giving red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth to the needy on Tuesdays.
- Kumbh Vivah / Ark Vivah – a symbolic ritual done before marriage in some communities.
- Red coral (moonga) – some astrologers suggest it, but gemstones should only be worn after a proper chart reading.
Most of all, communication, patience and respect between partners matter far more than any planet.
Manglik Dosha and Kundli Milan
Manglik Dosha is checked separately from the 36-guna Ashtakoot Milan. A good approach is:
- Check both partners for Manglik Dosha.
- Check the guna score with Kundli Milan.
- Look for Nadi and Bhakoot dosha in the result.
- Discuss the full picture with an experienced astrologer if something is unclear.
