What Is Nadi?
The word nadi means a channel or pulse. In Ayurveda, the body has three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vedic astrology links each of the 27 nakshatras to one of three Nadis that match these energies:
- Adi Nadi – Vata (air)
- Madhya Nadi – Pitta (fire)
- Antya Nadi – Kapha (water)
The traditional idea is that partners with different Nadis balance each other, while the same Nadi brings too much of one energy.

When Is Nadi Dosha Cancelled?
Classical texts mention several exceptions (parihar). The ones most commonly followed are:
- Same rashi, different nakshatra – both have the same Moon sign but different nakshatras.
- Same nakshatra, different rashi – the nakshatra is the same but it falls in different Moon signs (possible for nakshatras that cross two signs).
- Same nakshatra, different pada – many astrologers accept this, though some do not.
- Rashi lords are the same or friends – some traditions reduce the dosha in this case.
Because opinions differ, it is a good idea to ask an experienced astrologer to look at both charts before deciding.
Traditional Remedies for Nadi Dosha
Families who wish to follow traditional remedies commonly choose:
- Mahamrityunjaya Mantra – chanting or arranging a jaap, as it is linked with health and long life.
- Donation (daan) – giving grains, clothes or a cow-related donation, as advised by a priest.
- Nadi Dosha Nivaran Puja – a ritual performed in some temples before marriage.
